The show is up!

Thanks so much to everyone that turned out for my opening on Wednesday. It was a phenomenal response, not just from the many art students, but also dance and music people that had heard about the show. It was amazing to see the space I designed filled with a couple hundred people and the exhibit reacting to their presence with it's various sounds and visuals. The dancers in particular seemed to be quite interested in how it all worked and changed with their movements.

I was happy to see some artist/creators from dorkbotdc made the trek to Fairfax, as well as many friends and family coming from all over to see what I've been up to.

Here are a few images of the show, unfortunately I was too busy talking to take pictures during the opening. The installation is only up through next Thursday so those who didn't get a chance to come to the opening can still see it. Tomorrow (Saturday) it will be open from 11-5.

It's really impossible to photograph the true feeling of being in the space.... the photos are OK. Here's a short video that shows how the sensor are interacting (thanks Becky!).

A couple of things that surprised me:

1. The way that the streaming video altered behaviour. Some people were not wanting to see themselves on screen, while others discovered the way it worked and moved their body in unusual ways to effect the sensors.

2. A huge mass of people had no ill effects on the sensors, it just dealt with the mass as if it were a large moving body.

3. The 'memory' feature creates a sort of human graffiti, where people would leave a trace of themselves on screen, sometimes during the day, the image can remain for minutes or hours, until someone else approached the correct sensor.

4. Drilling holes in the gallery wall had an interesting effect on people trying to figure out what they were looking at. Walls are supposed to be solid, right? Very low tech, but in the context of the exhibit people assumed it was some kind of high tech LCD device...

Thanks again to all who made it! Now, if I can get just half the number to come out for my "repainting" of the space next Friday...that would be really nice. :-)
